Technology for Music Therapists: Creating Popular Music Mash-Ups

By Rebecca Vaudreuil, MT-BC, NMT, MusicWorx Staff Member

Popular music is something that goes hand in hand with technology. As technology continues to advance, so do the types of music that are created in music software programs. Client-preferred music and specific sounds are no longer able to be entirely replicated by live instruments played by music therapists. A new wave in popular music is called music mash-ups or meshes, which blend different songs, genres and artists. They are created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, by either overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another, or blending different segments of songs flawlessly into one another, creating a sequence customized by the client. Such works can be completely transformative of the original content when facilitated properly by a music therapist. Utilizing executive functioning, clients select the repertoire of songs to combine based on examining the musical components of sound such as time, tempo, duration, pitch, timbre, and rhythmic patterns. Once the mash-up is complete, clients can give credit to the artists of the songs that they use in the mash-up by making a video in iMovie.

Technology for MT’s: GarageBand: Technology to Facilitate Clients in Creating Innovative Musical Pieces

By Rebecca Vaudreuil, MT-BC, NMT, MusicWorx Staff Member

GarageBand is a software application for Mac operating systems, including your iPad, that allows you to create music or podcasts. It is developed by Apple Inc. as a part of the iLife software. GarageBand is extremely user-friendly, making it an ideal software program for music therapy, enabling clients to use as facilitated by a music therapist, as well as independently.

GarageBand offers its users capabilities to sequence internal sound clips and pre-recorded loops to create unique compositions. GarageBand can be used as a recording program to record live music from a variety of instruments and layer different tracks to create purely original compositions. GarageBand can also import mp3s, wav’s and other audio files to manipulate and allow users to create samples from preferred music.

Neurologic Music Therapy Intervention Ideas and Music Therapy Testimony:

Creating Original Compositions to Accompany Live Drum Set Playing

NMT Techniques: Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP)

I have been working with a client who has undergone double trans-tibial amputations on both legs and sustained a traumatic brain injury, but has shown great interest in playing the drum set. He has not previously played the drums and does not read rhythmic notation. By sequencing drum set music, part-by-part in garage band, the client is able to hear an accurate progression made by different parts of the drum kit, match them to the actual pieces of the full set, and then play back in real time. This intervention provides simultaneous bilateral movement of upper and lower extremities as well as exercises and reinforces cognition in the area of auditory recall.

Once the client became acclimated on the drum set, he was able to create original music that he played along to the rhythm of the music he produced.  Using GarageBand, the client was able to invent music that he has a strong preferential connection with, therefore enhancing the overall experience when he played the drum set along to his original composition.

From One Chapter To The Next: The transition from intern to professional

By Christina Scheperle, MusicWorx Intern #107

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” This famous line from Semisonic’s “Closing Time” appropriately symbols what every music therapy student feels as they come to the end of their internship. I believe this topic is important to talk about, because we all go through it at some point in our career.

When asked to write the next post for the MusicWorx blog, I immediately thought of this topic. I’m currently in the middle of transitioning from a intern to a professional! The act of transitioning is a difficult and exciting time for myself as well as every young music therapist. Finally, our minds are very full during this point in our careers and I think it is important to share our thoughts.

It is my hope that this post will give you some food for thought with straightforward, actionable items that may help you through this challenging process.

I am currently in the final days of my internship and getting ready to start a new job. While you may think my life would be getting less stressful, the last few weeks have not been easy.  In fact, they were extremely stressful. I know that I am not the only person who has felt this way.

What makes this transition so difficult?

  • Decisions: What is your next step? Do you stay or go? The world is open to you and you have nothing holding you back any more.
  • Jobs: We all know how this economy is. Do you settle on your first job offer or hold out until you get your dream opportunity? Do you create your dream opportunity?
  • Balance: Balancing professional vs. personal life choices. They are BOTH important.

Finally, you have to try to answer all of these questions while still finishing your work for internship and be the best therapist possible.

Sound familiar?

Well, here a few simple things to keep in mind during this process…it’s not rocket science, but when we are so busy with everything else, a simple reminder can only help!  These are based on my own personal experiences and conversations with peers and advisors.

  • Put things in perspective: We easily forget to do this. It’s easy to become wrapped up in ourselves and forget to look around.
  • Stay present with your clients and your work at internship: This is what you are here for.  You cannot let it slide just because you are worried about what will be next.
  • Process: Give yourself time to let your options sink in. Sleep on it and take some time for yourself to process.

Remember that whatever choice you make is the right one. We cannot predict our journey nor do we have much control over it. All we can do is make the choices that seem the best at this time. Que Sera, Sera!

AMTA 11: Through the Eyes of An Intern

By Carly Kazmerzak, MusicWorx Intern #106

AMTA 11 was a unique and memorable experience. I overcame new challenges, met new people, and saw professional growth in my peers and myself.

This was my first time presenting at a conference. My co-presenters were other therapists, many of whom I only knew through their textbooks. It was truly a humbling experience. While I only spoke a few words during the presentation, I assisted in gathering and organizing information from the presenters. This gave me the opportunity to communicate with them; I received words of gratitude and that really stirred me.  I truly felt that I was beginning to be seen as a professional.

I am not the type of person to go out of my way to meet people, however, thanks to Dr. Reuer, I was forced out of my comfort zone. Following her around, meeting new therapists, and working at the MusicWorx Inc booth taught me how to be more outgoing. After all, we are all in the same boat. I learned there really isn’t anything too scary about fellow therapists. I never really thought about the opportunities that may present themselves when we network. Each connection may lead to your next job or another connection for research.

Last but not least, I noticed that I was attending a variety of sessions, unlike past AMTA conferences I attended. I explored different “How to start your own practice” sessions and attended sessions with populations that I am working with. As a student attending the conference, I didn’t have a direct need to learn from the sessions or use them as opportunities to expand my knowledge of music therapy. This year I found myself seeking sessions that I felt I would benefit from.

While I am still an intern for another month, I left Atlanta ready to be a professional.

Six-Month Chrysalis

By Sarah Sendlbeck, MusicWorx Intern #105

For the last 5 months, as part of my internship, I have been diligently working away at my newest project.  It’s entitled: “Six-Month Chrysalis” and its a 12-chapter book which features over 100 stories, insights, and confessions from over 15 years of music therapy interns.

Not only is it a great coffee table book for the music therapist, it will be a excellent learning tool for professors, and a resource for students and new interns.  Topics such as “death and dying, “personal and professional growth” and “dealing with declines,” are split into chapters as a means for reflection.  The book provides great insight into the life of an intern, soon to be professional, and the types of scenarios and situations one may encounter.  The book will feature a series of questions for study purposes and reflection, as well as an index split by population for easy reference.

I’m VERY excited for the launching of this book.  It is going to be a beautiful contribution to music therapy literature, as it houses the most intimate moments and learning curves from current interns, and now successful professionals during their internship experience.

The book will be introduced at the 2011 AMTA Conference in Atlanta, GA. Check out some selections of the book during regular exhibit hall hours at the MusicWorx Inc. booth (#404) from Thursday, November 11th through Saturday, November 19th! Put your name in for a drawing and have a chance to win one of three copies! The “butterfly” is set to launch in early Spring 2012!

**All names and likenesses in the book have been removed for the confidentiality of our clients and interns.

Walk the Line: Tips for being HIPAA Conscientious While Posting on Social Media Sites

By Sarah Sendlbeck, MusicWorx Intern #105

Many have heard of it, some have not.  HIPAA is an acronym that stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.   If you have ever been actively involved in a hospital or facility, these letters have been screamed at you.  “I just have to make sure that, no matter what, all the information regarding my patients and clients remains confidential, right?”Right.

Music Therapists are beginning to expand their online presence through various social media sites (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogging). However, it is important to be conscious of what your putting up on your sites.  It makes me cringe when I see colleagues posting pictures, updates, thoughts or stories that border the very thin line between okay and violation.

Here are a few tips to ensure that you’re not crossing that line:

  1. When in doubt, leave it out.
  2. Remove any identifying information- Just remember: NOLF (Name, Occupation, Location, Facility).
  3. If you wouldn’t want the public to know it about your mother, don’t share.
  4. All photographs, video, drawings, art, poetry MUST have a waiver signed by the patient allowing you to use/share.
  5. Every time you’re writing something, double-check. Ask yourself, “Am I violating my client’s privacy by saying this?”

Keep this in mind: Would you want information about your upcoming surgery, intimate moment with your therapist or struggles posted online for hundreds of people to see? I don’t think so.

In conclusion:

DO NOT assume that people cannot infer who a patient is.

DO NOT assume your patient “won’t mind if I talk about this.”

DO use your moments of learning for reflection and teaching moments.

DO trust in a mentor so that you may process any exciting or difficult sessions (sticking to HIPAA protocol of course!).

DO put disclaimers in blog posts and updates letting your audience know NOLFhas been changed to protect confidentiality.

DO get permission from patients and clients to share those “WOW” experiences.
